sample planning:
Ask children to think about their literacy lessons – TTYP and name the important details that are needed in telling a story
(e.g. time, place, characters and events).
Ask children to the recall names of the four main Gospels.
Do they all tell the same story? (Essentially yes but lead children towards idea that they are different versions of the same story).
Use analogy of an incident occurring on the playground – would each child tell the same incident in the same way? No they would tell their version of the same event – some details and word choices would differ.
Talk about today’s WALT and explain that we are going to be looking at some different Gospel accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ. Explain to ch that, in order to achieve their WALT, they will need to be comparing and contrasting everything which they read.
Explain briefly that three out of the four Gospels deal with the birth or Christ; there are many similarities and many differences in the way in which the Gospels record and explain the event.
For today’s lesson we are going to focus on Matthew’s Gospel and Luke’s Gospel.
Children to have Bibles on carpet. Read the story of the birth of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew Mt. 1: 18-2:23 and the Gospel of Luke Lk. 2: 1-14.
Using the PPT ask, show children the following table:
Details found only in Matthew’s Gospel.
Details found only in Luke’s Gospel.
Details found in both Gospel’
Discuss possible reasons for the differences in the two accounts. They are coming from two different people; points of view; written at different times but the basic story is the same.
Briefly recap last lesson. Which two Gospels did we look at? Which story were we reading? Did both Gospels tell the story in

To use skimming and scanning skills to read information texts and identify the main features in structure and language.
I can identify the features of an information text.
I can create subheadings for my information text.
I can choose relevant information for my note taking.
Starter:
Go over what skimming and scanning skills are with the class.
What is the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts? Think of as many features as you can.
Introduction:
Explain that by the end of the week we will be making some informative leaflets, however, we must first research what we would like to include within our leaflets.
What is an information text? What does it do?
Look at the leaflets on your tables.
Create a checklist as a table.
Introduction (what is the text about?)
Each paragraph is a main idea.
Sub headings
Questions to make the reader think
Use formal and impersonal language.
Talk about ‘people’ and ‘they’. Try not to use personal pronouns, such as I or me.
Stick to the facts
Some descriptive phrases
Conclusion to sum up.
Diagrams
Technical vocabulary
Text boxes
Present tense
Third person
This will be used later on to inform them of their own structure and design for their leaflet.
Move onto Diwali and researching the topic:
What do you already know about Diwali?
Let’s share our ideas.
What questions do we want to know the answers to?
Today, you are going to start your research for your information text on Diwali.
Think of a title
Think of your sub headings (nice to have a question)
Collect your notes (what skills will you be using? Skim, scan, note).
Collect diagrams (make notes as to where they are)
Chn to be given a grid to write their four question on that they will then research.
In your notes:
Get as much technical vocabulary as you can.
Get as much information as you can.
Main:
To collect notes for your information texts from iPads. Look at Kidrex.

PRAYER Start with prayer, light candle, music – look at and reflect on the temptations of Jesus.
INTRODUCTION
Read the text of the temptations of Jesus. Why was Jesus in the desert in the first place? What had just happened to him before this episode in his life?
Recall the three things the devil asked Jesus to do.
What was Jesus’ response on each occasion?
Why do you think these three things were chosen to tempt Jesus?
Jesus was as human as you and me, in all but sin, and yet at the same time he was Gods’ Son.
Do you really think it was difficult for him to say no to the devil? Why do you think it might have been difficult?
Look at the text again. Are there any indicators, which show that this was easy?
MAIN ACTIVITY
Imagine you are Jesus. Write a diary entry about the temptations and how it affected you.
LA to use writing frame
MA to work with partners and write a diary entry about the temptations and how it affected them.

Advent Lesson Religious Education Year 5
A great lesson for the season of advent.
sample planning :
Begin the lesson by sharing the learning objective with the children. Give each table two different coloured post it notes and ask the children to write what they already know about advent, on one coloured post it, and anything that they would like to know about advent on the other. Children to share ideas and keep post its. If the question is not answered in the lesson they should put it in their RE book to inform the next RE lesson’s teaching.
CT and children to discuss the liturgical seasons of the year. What are they? How many are there? What is the first season of the liturgical year? Do we use colour with the liturgical seasons?
Ask the children to work on netbooks to research the meaning of the word Advent. Can they find out which language the word originates from? What does it mean?
http://projectbritain.com/Advent.html
Bring the children back together and ask them to feedback their findings to create a class mindmap. Children to then draw and complete a mind map in their books illustrating what they already know about the liturgical season of Advent.
Explore the duel meaning of the season: to prepare for the birthday of Jesus and to prepare for Jesus to come again.
Set up prayer partners for the period of advent
Easter Resources Powerpoints Lessons PDFs Catholic Flavour Lots of Resources
I’ve combined all my planning from the schools I taught in.
I was in a few schools in the U.K., quite a few of them Catholic.
There is a massive amount of planning for you to sift through. Years range all the way through from 4 year olds to 11 year olds.
There’s some great powerpoints, lesson plans, sheets, even a play or two.
You’ll have to sift through them as I am enjoying my retirement too much to do that!
You get over 250 mb of stuff (300 plus files)
Six Powerpoints Explaining the Early Books of the Bible Religion
6 Powerpoints on the early books of the bible.

RE Christmas lesson Four Powerpoint and Planning Catholic Flavour
Lesson four in my nice Christmas unit.
Please look at the others to get the idea.
Nice powerpoint ion this one.
Religion Story of the People of God Lots of Planning Catholic Flavour
Lots of great planning.
The unit covers:
Start to understand the structure of the Bible.
Research some different styles of writing found in the Bible.
Discuss some of the important figures in the OT and understand why and how they had a special relationship with God.
Analyse The story of the fall.
Know the story of Cain and Abel.
Relate the story to our relationships with friends and family.
Know the story of Manna from Heaven. (Exodus 16: 1-18)
Understand why God provided for the needs of his people.
Empathise with all involved.
Explain how we can show our love for God through our obedience of the ten commandments.
Sample planning :
Introduce the new unit to the children and explain that, through this five week unit of RE, we will be learning about some of the different styles of literature found in the Bible. We will also be learning about some significant people from the Old Testament and their relationship with God.
Introduce the LO.
Display the word ‘ancestors’ on the board and children to TTYP and discuss the meaning of the word.
Take feedback from class.
Share meaning and address any misconceptions.
Children to think about stories that they know about their family and the ancestors that went before them. Talk about people who research their family tree – they are researching their ancestors. The people who came before them. Discuss the program ‘Who do you think you are?’ on BBC 1. Show the opening credits http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCeWuSgiqHI
Discuss the title of the program. Don’t these celebrities already know who they are? They know their own names, their dates of birth, their parents’ names: what else are they looking for?
Discuss how a knowledge of where we have come from, might help us to understand or plan where we need to go to.
Bring this back to the Bible. The Bible is a library of books which gives us information about our ancestors – the people of God.
Explain to the children that the Bible contains the story of the Jewish people in the Old Testament and is the foundation of the story of the Christian people in the New Testament.
Revise work from Year 4 about the Bible being a library of books rather than just one book. (Use the ‘books of the Bible’ slide on PPT). Ch to count up how many books in the Bible – 39 in OT, 27 in NT – 66 in total
